What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the natural healing art focused on correcting the spinal misalignment and restoring the body and spine to a balanced, aligned position. Chiropractic removes the interference to the nervous system by correcting the root cause of the interference, the spinal misalignment. A misaligned spine causes interference to the nervous system, causing the body to express symptoms such as pain, disease, sickness or dysfunction. Removing nervous system interference is vital in allowing the body to heal and function as it was intended. The fundamental principle behind Chiropractic is the human body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism that needs no invasive outside intervention to heal.
Chiropractors are the only licensed health care practitioner trained to detect and correct nervous system interference. Chiropractic is a non-replicating healing modality. In other words, it cannot be replicated by medicine, osteopathy, physical therapy, massage therapy or any other health modality. Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs, perform surgery, perform rubdowns or back massages, muscle work, heat treatments, etc.
I've tried other forms of chiropractic, other doctors and healing methods, how is this different?
The biggest misconception in chiropractic is all chiropractic techniques are the same. Some individuals may be under the impression that if you’ve tried one approach, you’ve tried them all. In reality, there are over 350 types of chiropractic techniques. Each technique operates under the same foundational philosophy, however each have distinct differences. Quite often, QSM³ patients achieve results they were unable to achieve with a traditional chiropractic approach, or other healthcare modalities.
The QSM³ (Quantum Spinal Mechanics³) is a postural-based upper cervical chiropractic technique, practiced by only 50 certified and credentialed chiropractors worldwide. QSM³ doctors look beyond the traditional chiropractic “one vertebra out of place” model, and incorporates an advanced analysis and correction of the whole human frame from pelvis to skull. This comprehensive, and often overlooked, approach brings more specificity to the spinal correction in an attempt to reduce spinal corrections and optimize results. QSM³ aims to restore the body to its highest mechanical potential, a completely balanced and aligned state. No other chiropractic or healthcare method analyzes the full human frame from a three-dimensional approach and incorporates a corrective algorithm to address that three-dimensional spinal breakdown.
QSM³ is at present the most progressive upper cervical chiropractic procedure. It was founded on the principles of traditional upper cervical chiropractic procedures, but with the vision to advance the corrective technical approach into the 21st Century.
Is the QSM3 chiropractic adjustment safe? Are there are any side effects?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapy available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal (nerves and muscles) complaints. More people are seeking chiropractic care than ever before as it possesses a stronger safety record as compared to medication and surgeries. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small and any risks from the QSM³ spinal correction are even smaller.
Most patients feel relief within the first several hours following chiropractic adjustment. It is common for some to experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, in areas other than where the doctor contacted the spine, just as one might feel after physical activity or exercise. This is a result of the spine releasing into a corrected position. Any minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades over time as the spine and body begin to stabilize into the less stressed, balanced position.
How is the QSM³ chiropractic adjustment performed?
The QSM³ spinal correction is performed using a gentle yet controlled contact on the uppermost area of the spine, where the neck meets the skull. The release of the misalignment at this area is designed to restore balance to the entire spine and nervous system, ultimately releasing physical and neurological stress to the body. Even though the adjustment is administered at the neck, the efforts of the correction influences the whole spine and all body systems.
The QSM³ procedure is able to influence the entire postural and balance system because the highest control centers of body balance and healing are located at the brain stem, located at the junction where the skull meets the spine.
Many find the adjustment relaxing and comfortable. There is no twisting, cracking or popping of the spine during the adjustment. Patient’s lie on their side as the neck is gently corrected in a specific, pre determined manner. Since the adjustment is so gentle, QSM³ doctors adjust children, seniors and even hard to treat patients, such as those whom have had spinal surgery.
What can you expect on your first visit?
Your first visit is focused on gathering the necessary data to determine if our care will be effective for you. Combined with a thorough consultation with Dr. Millman, structural and postural diagnostic assessments will determine if you have an imbalance, and to what degree, resulting in any dysfunction. This assessment measures the three-dimensional postural misalignment and is only practiced by QSM3 practitioners. This three-dimensional assessment is critical in order to determine how much stress your body is under and how much it is having to compensate for that stress. Based on the data obtained from your examination, we are able to provide the specific spinal correction, if needed. X-rays are not acquired on site. If x-rays are necessary, we will provide you an appropriate referral before any procedure is performed.
What should I expect after the first Chiropractic adjustment?
Patients report a variety of changes within their body following the adjustment. The most common thing reported when one begins a correction regime is stiffness and soreness, like “workout soreness.” Because the body is released into positions it hasn’t experienced in quite some time, there is an adaptive, or recalibration, period during the healing process. Soreness is often short-lived.
Most patients report an increase in overall energy, ability to sleep better and more flexibility and range of motion shortly after the adjustment.
Is Chiropractic care expensive?
Many of our patients find the money they invest in chiropractic care to be substantially less than what is invested in their medical care. Our patients report a significant savings in other healthcare costs, simply because when the body and nervous system are healthier, outside or traditional medical intervention isn’t needed as often.
Most of our patients have limited or no insurance coverage, yet are able to keep chiropractic care a part of their lifestyle and healthcare routine. We offer payment options to fit any budget, whether you’re in a health crisis or you’re seeking lifestyle, or maintenance care. We work to assist those looking to make chiropractic care a part of their wellness lifestyle.
How long will my visits take?
Your first two visits will be your longest visits. Expect to be in our office at least an hour to an hour and a half for those two visits. Subsequent follow up visits last 15-30 minutes, depending on wait time.
I have heard once you start going to a Chiropractor, you have to go for the rest of your life. Is this true?
Before we answer that question, ask yourself how many times you have gone to the dentist and why do you keep going back? If you exercise regularly, why? What about taking your car to get serviced, tires rotated or oil changed?
We do these things because anything that is repeatedly used needs proper maintenance and upkeep. You didn’t exercise just once and never return to the gym and you certainly didn’t brush your teeth just once. Gross, right? We feel the same way about your spine and nervous system. Like most people, we go to the dentist or service our car for proper maintenance and to avoid major issues. If you didn’t go to the dentist or get your car serviced regularly, you may end up spending more in the long run.
Your body is no different, and proper overall maintenance and care hold true in chiropractic. Except when it comes to chiropractic, we’re now talking about your health and every aspect of it. Many people initially come to our office and seek help for a particular issue and then continue to get adjusted for maintenance purposes and to ensure their optimal health, whatever phase or their life they are in. The initial corrective program often entails more visits closer together in frequency whereas lifestyle chiropractic care, or maintenance adjustments are recommended 1-2 times per month for the average person. Recommendations are made on a case-by-case basis.
Is it safe to see a Chiropractor if I'm pregnant?
Not only is it safe for pregnant woman to see a chiropractor, it is highly recommended. The foundational purpose of the QSM³ chiropractic adjustment is to restore proper neurological function and structural balance to the entire body, both of which are crucial elements to a healthy pregnancy, labor and delivery.
According to the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, a 2007 review of the chiropractic literature noted pregnant women reporting a seventy-five percent (75%) relief from pregnancy pain through regular chiropractic care during pregnancy as well as twenty-five percent (25%) reported shorter labor times during their first pregnancy, thirty-one percent (31%) for multiparous women, after having received regular chiropractic care compared to women not under chiropractic care.
The QSM³ adjustment is performed with the patient lying on their side, therefore pregnant women find the adjustment comfortable and relaxing. A properly balanced spine and nervous system is vital in preparing a pregnant body to aid in the labor and delivery, not just for the relief of back pain through pregnancy. Many women seek care postpartum to assist in the 4th trimester transition, whether it be the baby’s transition through breastfeeding or to limit the stress of the newborn.
Is Chiropractic safe and appropriate for infants and children?
Yes. Dr. Millman has extensive knowledge in the care of pediatric patients and the unique challenges they can present. Dr. Millman is a candidate to become Board Certified in Chiropractic Pediatrics after having completed the extensive program by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
The QSM³ chiropractic care that we provide is an effective and affordable foundational approach that directly addresses many common health conditions experienced by infants and children associated with nervous and musculoskeletal system imbalances. Our gentle, noninvasive, drug-free, chiropractic adjustments effectively address, resolve and prevent a wide range of health problems. Recent research by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) found spinal adjustments safe and successful in caring for children of all ages.
Chiropractic America reports that natural, drug-free chiropractic care is sometimes more effective than traditional medical approaches for chronic earache, scoliosis, and neck pain. Headaches and sleep disorders of nonspecific causes respond well to spinal adjustments, which affect and repair interrupted neural pathways. The symptoms associated with asthma, allergies, and patterns of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sensory processing disorder and autism spectrum disorder may also be helped with upper cervical chiropractic care.
The area that is most commonly injured in the child during the birth process is the upper neck and skull. The risk of injury to these areas, and related health issues, goes up exponentially as birth intervention levels go up. C-sections, forceps, vacuum extraction, and prolonged pushing all lead to an increased risk of traumatic birth injury.
Unfortunately, no one in the medical system is trained to assess (or address) these sorts of injuries. Quite often they go completely unmentioned to parents. Once an injury occurs, it can put pressure on the brain stem and spinal cord, as well as the spinal nerves in the vicinity, leading to improper neurological “signaling” or “communication” into and out of the central nervous system. Over time, or over the course of a child’s life, undetected birth trauma is never even considered. This challenge to the communication system of the body is one of the primary reasons so many children with autism have challenges with sensory processing, social interaction and behavior, and learning.
When should I take my child to a Chiropractor?
Whether your child is in the middle of a health crisis or they are the vision of health, we recommend assessing the nervous system to ensure proper health and vitality, through their growth and development as well as to ensure great health for a lifetime. Periodic ongoing adjustments at a young age wards off future health challenges, preventing most common health challenges long before they arise. Just like how you brush and floss your teeth regularly to ensure proper oral health and to ward off cavities, ensuring proper spinal alignment now improves the immune system, optimizes growth and development in the critical years and may delay or prevent degenerative bone or joint disease, such as osteoarthritis.
Maintaining a child’s health through regular visits to our office will help instill the value of proactive health care in children. They’ll be more likely to monitor and manage their health more effectively as they grow up and less likely to be afraid or in denial of any health problems. Encouraging good lifelong health habits and showing children that health comes from within versus turning to an outside-in (medications or drugs) is one of best things you could ever do for the health of your child.
